Monkeypox information

Note: This was originally a post on the Bay Area Poly Happy Hour Facebook page aimed at nonmonogamous communities (hence some of the language, and it’s been partially updated since), but all are welcome.

Here We Go Again

Monkeypox (MPXV) has recently been declared a global health emergency by the WHO after a large uptick in cases throughout Europe and North America. A significant number of these cases have been in San Francisco and the Bay Area. - Let’s talk about it.

<aside> 💡 Quick note. This is not intended as a primary source of information. Much of the information comes from the SF AIDS Foundation; CDC, Alameda County, SF Gov, The WHO, CDPH, and the American Medical Association (AMA). Please refer to well-respected sources for the most accurate and up-to-date information available, understanding that the CDC is often insufficiently protective of public health, and [state and local health departments (and the sources that rely on them) are sometimes insufficiently protective, too, like the NYC Department of Public Health.](https://whistleblower.org/press/press-release-new-york-city-monkeypox-whistleblower-testifies-about-health-departments-dangerous-monkeypox-public-messaging/?fbclid=IwAR1gla6BY-ThF2bYBztlaj0mxOSeN3qJbC_etQMOmmC6WRGhokbfs-LtOgY.) We’ll add resources here, as we’re able.

Monkeypox is not an STI, but in the US, sexual activities have accounted for much of the spread, and the vast majority of documented monkeypox cases in the United States are in self-described gay/bisexual men.

An important note about the word “monkeypox”

Many people find the word monkeypox to be stigmatizing, and prefer using MPXV, MPX, Mpox, or another word or abbreviation. The only reason that this document uses the word “monkeypox” is so readers who are skimming the document won’t get confused. As soon as another word for this virus is better known in our communities, we’ll update this document to use it throughout.
